My 10 operational rules to conquer digital burnout
From studio discipline to digital mastery
Tom Sachs’ “Ten Bullets” are a rigorous set of rules developed for his studio, demanding a ruthless commitment to systematic efficiency. For the modern digital worker, these principles combat burnout by shifting the burden of execution from limited willpower to a perfected system. I refer to these daily to keep my life simple.
1. Sacred Space: The Digital Fortress
The Principle: Keep your tools at the ready so inspiration has no friction.
The Digital Mandate: Keep ONE THING on your screen. Use separate virtual desktops and ruthlessly control notifications.
Effect: Eliminates digital noise and reduces switching costs.
2. Always Be Knolling: Standardization is Clarity
The Principle: Arrange things parallel and perpendicular; eliminate chaos.
The Digital Mandate: Implement uniform naming conventions (System Knolling) across all shared files and folders. Perform a Weekly Knolling Ritual as part of a weekly review to clean up pins and archives.
Effect: Reduces cognitive load and enables instant information retrieval.
3. Keep a List: Your Past and Future
The Principle: Your list is your past and future; carry it at all times.
The Digital Mandate: Centralize all action items into a single, trusted system. Maintain the Three-Tier List: Today (3 High-Impact Tasks), This Week, and This Quarter.
Effect: Provides radical clarity on immediate and strategic priorities.
4. Work to Code: Code is the Standard
The Principle: Creativity is the enemy. Standard procedure is the master.
The Digital Mandate: Every recurring task must be codified into a template or SOP (Template Mandate). Use standardized formats for all meetings.
Effect: Eliminates process debt and ensures consistent quality.
5. Be On Time: Focused Presence
The Principle: Respect the clock, both for arrivals and sustained focus.
The Digital Mandate: Being “on time” means being mentally present. Use the Mute Mandate in virtual meetings and Protect the Block by scheduling mandatory deep work time.
Effect: Restores personal agency and makes synchronous time effective.
6. I Understand: End Ambiguity
The Principle: If you understand, say “I Understand.” If not, say “I Don’t Understand.”
The Digital Mandate: Use the Readback Protocol for all critical items: the recipient must reply with “I understand: [Brief summary of the agreed action/decision].”
Effect: Eliminates guesswork and prevents major rework/misalignment.
7. Sent Does Not Mean Received: The Confirmation Loop
The Principle: Always obtain a receipt or proof of delivery to the intended recipient.
The Digital Mandate: Implement Confirmation Loops. For mission-critical communications, require a mandatory follow-up confirmation (e.g., “Please confirm receipt by 5 pm Central Time today”). Ensure a Digital Paper Trail.
Effect: Formalizes decision-making and closes the loop on high-risk items.
8. End-of-Day Reset: Leave No Trace
The Principle: Complete the task and leave no trace; pass along relevant information.
The Digital Mandate: Create a firm, daily boundary. Use the Plan Tomorrow, Today method and define the Tomorrow 3 list (3 High-Impact Tasks for the next day) before logging off. Ensure all progress is documented (Pass It On).
Effect: Guarantees you start the next day in flow state, eliminating decision fatigue.
9. Procrastinate: Procrastination is a System Signal
The Principle: Sometimes, you have to delay to think about what’s most important.
The Digital Mandate: When repeatedly avoiding a task, analyze the friction (Is the template wrong? Is the objective unclear?).
Effect: Transforms avoidance from a time sink into a valuable diagnostic tool, revealing process errors or goal misalignment.
10. The Tenacity Prayer: Consistent Action
The Principle: Persistence and determination outmatch talent and sporadic bursts of inspiration.
The Digital Mandate: The true test of digital tenacity is sustaining focus and discipline. Resist the Rebuild Urge to switch tools. Focus on the Daily Show-Up instead. Consistent, high-leverage actions.
Effect: Creates a long-term, stable environment for compound growth and anchors the team during chaos.
